How I approach ‘contradictions’ in the Bible

Bejon examines the argument that these accounts are contradictory through four questions:

  1. How much interpretation is inherent?
  2. Can (I imagine how) both could be true?
  3. How well do the accounts stand alone?
  4. Is there a reason for the omissions?

In conclusion, Bejon argues that Matthew’s and Luke’s accounts are not poorly recorded accounts, but instead are accounts with intelligent reasons for recording or not recording specific details. Rather than being merely defensive, the reasons given for understanding these apparent contradictions can expand our understanding of the Gospels and what the writers are doing.
